Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park is one of the top tourist destinations in Uluwatu in southeastern Bali. Spanning approximately 60 hectares, the park is home to several statues of imposing size, as well as a museum, a theater, and impressive landscape architecture. It is essentially an open-air museum where visitors can admire monumental statues and structures reflecting Balinese Hindu traditions.
In Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu is regarded as the protector of the universe, while his faithful companion—the mighty, eagle-like Garuda—represents loyalty and selfless devotion.
At the heart of this stunning oasis lies the park’s centerpiece: the Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue — a monumental depiction of the Hindu god Vishnu riding his mystical Garuda.
Both Wisnu and Garuda are adorned with crowns made of gold mosaic. The Garuda is also the national symbol of Indonesia and represents freedom.
The official height of the entire structure, comprising the statue and the pedestal, is 120.9 meters. There is a large hall on the ground floor of the pedestal, and an observation deck is located on the eighth floor. The statue itself is also accessible; one can look out from the structure at the 23rd-floor level.
The statue’s exterior is made of polyester over stainless steel and was assembled from 754 modules.
A concrete support and an elaborate structure of steel girders were erected inside. Consequently, the statue has a steel weight of 1,700 tonnes and a total weight of 4,000 tonnes.
The observation deck inside the statue is located on the 20th floor; the walls and floor are made of glass, allowing visitors to marvel at the statue’s internal structure.
Plaza Wisnu
A flight of stairs leads from Turtle Plaza to Plaza Wisnu. Here, you will find an impressive 23-meter-tall statue of Lord Wisnu. This plaza marks the highest point in GWK Cultural Park. It offers a fantastic view to the north; the airport is almost always visible, and in good weather, the view extends even further. You also get a great view of the large Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue from this spot.
Lotus Pond
A wide, imposing staircase leads from Plaza Garuda to the area known as the Lotus Pond. Flanked by several towering limestone pillars, it covers an area of approximately 4,000 square meters. Due to its size, the Lotus Pond is sometimes used for large-scale events, such as concerts.
The sheer scale of the divine statues is truly impressive. Thanks to its central location on the Bukit Peninsula—and the resulting easy access from Bali’s tourist hubs—the cultural park can readily be included in many travel itineraries.
