The Villa Borghese park in Rome is considered one of the most beautiful of the city’s numerous green spaces and impresses with its fantastic location in the center of the Eternal City.

The villa itself was built by the architect Flaminio Ponzo and his pupil Giovanni Vasanzio, commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul V. The gardens were designed under the direction of Domenico Savino da Montepulciano and embellished by Girolamo Rainaldi. The project, commissioned by Scipione Borghese, spanned from 1608 to 1633, the year of the Cardinal’s death.
After his death, the estate passed to his heirs, who gave the park its present appearance at the end of the 18th century.
In the 18th century, the architect Antonio Asprucci and his son Mario were commissioned by Marcantonio Borghese to carry out restoration and improvement work on the Villa Borghese.

Strolling towards the Galleria Borghese, you will first encounter the old Aurelian city wall from the 3rd century AD, which separates a small part of the park from the actual country estate, which was still outside the city walls in the 17th century.
Another impressive places in the Villa Borghese the lake, where you can rent boats and admire masterpieces: among them are the Temple of Asclepius, which rises in the middle of the water, and the sundial and the fountain of the Satyr family, which can be seen on the shore.
